As an electronics and electromechanical re-engineering, design, and manufacturing company, we build products for customers on a contract basis. Our work ranges from printed circuit board assemblies to complete electronic systems, including wiring and wire harnesses for all markets and operating environments.
In many cases, customers come to us when their products no longer perform as required, need new technology, have become obsolete, or must be re-engineered to be smaller, more cost-effective, or more reliable. We provide the support and expertise needed to re-engineer these products, so they meet changing market needs.
In this project, our customer had a successful product but identified several sales opportunities for a smaller, lower-cost version. They asked whether we could support the required changes. As a contract design and manufacturing company, we proposed solutions that would help them target the lower-cost market with an improved product.
The project involved a deep-sea system designed to operate at a depth of 1 kilometre. The existing system was large, difficult to handle, and challenging to maintain. Highland Electronic Systems Ltd proposed a new specification for a version that would be 40% smaller, operate at depths of up to 3 kilometres, and use a modular electronic assembly so each functional section could be replaced through a plug-and-play interface.
Our customer accepted the upgrade proposal, and the product was re-engineered to meet the new specification while retaining the existing electronics and interfaces. This avoided the need for new controls or firmware. We produced a prototype that met all objectives for cost reduction, size, and maintainability, and the product is now in field testing, which is nearly complete.
We are now building the new version for our customer. The improvements have opened new markets and sectors, creating further opportunities for them to sell, operate, grow, and develop the product.
